چکیده

The shape of the Ti I 6303.8 Å spectral line of Aldebaran as measured by the line bisector was investigated using high signal-to-noise, high resolution data. The goal of this study was to understand the nature of the 643-day period in the radial velocity for this star reported by Hatzes and Cochran. Variations in the line bisector with the radial velocity period would provide strong evidence in support of rotational modulation or stellar pulsations as the cause of the 643-day period. A lack of any bisector variability at this period would support the planet hypothesis. Variations in the line asymmetries are found with a period of 49.93 days. These variations are uncorrelated with 643-day period found previously in the radial velocity measurements. It is demonstrated that this 50-day period is consistent with an m = 4 nonradial sectoral g-mode oscillation. The lack of spectral variability with the radial velocity period of 643 days may provide strong evidence in support of the hypothesis that this variability stems from the reflex motion of the central star due to a planetary companion having a mass of 11 Jupiter masses. However, this long-period variability may still be due to a low order (m = 2) pulsation mode since these would cause bisector variations less than the error measurement.

A Search for Variability in the Spectral Line Shapes of τ Bootis : Does this Star Really Have a Planet ?

An analysis is made of the spectral line shapes of τ Bootis using high resolution (0.026 Å) and high signal-to-noise (S/N ≈ 400) data in an effort to confirm the planet hypothesis for this star. Changes in the line shape are quantified using spectral line bisectors and line residuals. We detect no variations in either of these quantities above the level of the noise in the data. One spectral li...

Bisector analysis as a diagnostic of intrinsic radial - velocity variations

In this contribution we present the results of the application of the bisector of the cross-correlation function as a diagnostic of activity-related radial-velocity variations. The results show that the technique is very effective. We present examples for which the application of the bisector analysis was essential to establish the planetary nature of the candidate or to exclude an orbital sign...

Discriminating stellar activity, oscillations and planets

Context. Bisectors of strong, single spectral lines, usually the Fe  6252 line, have traditionally been used to examine the velocity fields in stellar atmospheres. This requires high S/N often achieved by summing many individual spectra. Aims. We investigate whether bisectors derived from cross-correlation functions (CCF) of single-exposure spectra can be used to provide information on stellar...

Search for exoplanets with the radial-velocity technique: quantitative diagnostics of stellar activity

Aims. It is known that stellar activity may complicate the analysis of high-precision radial-velocity spectroscopic data when looking for exoplanets signatures. We aim at quantifying the impact of stellar spots on stars with various spectral types and rotational velocities and comparing the simulations with data obtained with the HARPS spectrograph. Methods. We have developed detailed simulatio...
